What happens in a music therapy session?
The methods employed in music therapy can be roughly divided into active and receptive techniques. When a person is making music whether by singing, playing instruments or composing that person is using active techniques whereas when a person respond to music by dancing or involve listening and analyzing lyrics it comes under receptive techniques.
Such therapy sessions can be conducted with individuals or in groups.
Music Therapy sessions are always goal driven and so what actually happens in the session will vary greatly depending on the needs and level of participation.
To begin the session, a hello song is sung so that is brings everyone together and gather the group to begin.
Sometimes the Gathering Song includes instruments for the students to take turns or share and support peer social interactions. Other times, a Gathering Song would include Body Percussion like clapping hands, patting knees, or stamping feet.
Depending on the group goals, the music experiences in the session may include a variety of music therapy strategies and interventions.
A closing song tells everyone in the group that our music time is finished and they are now transitioning to the next activity.
